We will attempt to answer any questions you might have about our Toy Database in this FAQ. If you have an unanswered question, please feel free to Contact Us.
Q: The Database is missing a category or an item. Will it be added?
A: While we've worked on adding as many items to the database as we can, inevitibly there will be items we've missed or haven't had time to add. If an item, line, series, etc is missing you're welcome to either Contact Us and let us know, or you can add the item(s) yourself.
Q: How do I go about adding an item to The Database?
A: In order to contribute to the Database you need to be a registered user of ToyTraderz.com. Once registered, you have the ability to contribute new items, including photos, items, even base categories. To add a category, item or photo to the database, first navigate to the category in which the item will be placed. Once there, use the navigation links on the left of the screen to add the particular piece. To add a category or item, use the Add Album link; to add a photo, use the Add Item link.
Q: When adding an item or category, what details should I add?
A: When adding a new item or category (both of which fall under the "Add Album" umbrella):
- You'll need to add the name of the directory in which the images will go, the title and in some cases the description. The folder and title should both be an accurate representation of the item's name. For instance, if you're adding an Optimus Prime figure both the Name and Title should be "Optimus Prime" with spaces included.
- Please note that the Name field (the folder) cannot include most non-alphanumeric characters so you may need to improvise when naming the folder.
- For the most part categories do not need a description, but each item should have a description, even if it's something simple to the effect of "This is the ABC figure from the XYZ line." Examples of good information to include would be (as applicable) the size scale, edition size, variations and any interesting notes or information.
- Please note: You do not need to enter anything in the Summary or Keywords fields. These will not be displayed.
- Once an item has been created, you would then go to the Custom Fields tab and add any information for the Manufacturer, Release Year or Accessories.
When adding an image to an item (whether it's one you created or an existing item) you use the "Add Item" link.
- Please give your images useful names. "spidermancarded.jpg" is fine, but please avoid general filenames like "img001.jpg".
- Make sure the "From Web Browser" tab is active, use the Browse button to find the image on your computer.
- You can select several images at one time in the Upload boxes before hitting the "Add Items" button at the bottom of the page.
- If you need more upload boxes than the two provided, simply click the "More Upload Boxes" link for each one that you need.
- Please ensure that the "Set items title from:" is set to Caption, and make sure the Summary and Description checkboxes are NOT marked.
- The "Create Thumbnails Now" box should remain checked
Q: What requirements are there on photos or information I add?
A: We appreciate any contributes made to ToyTraderz, but for various reasons we've set a few basic standards.
- Please make sure the photos you submit are yours, or that you have proper permission to submit them.
- Photos should be a minimum of 500 pixels on their longest side.
- Photos should be a maximum if 1280 pixels on their longest side.
- Photos should be taken against a somewhat neutral background. A single solid color (particularly a black, white, gray or blue) is ideal. We just don't want a busy background to detract from the image's subject.
- Photos will not be accepted for similar shots of items already pictured in the database. We will accept multiple images of the same item based on the following conditions - packaged vs. loose; multiple poses of well-articulated figures (within reason); variations of packaging and loose figures; multiple angles (though we'd like to limit to front, side, back, and head-shot). There may be exceptions made for upgrades in image quality.
- Quality counts! Please make sure pictures are not blurry, excessively crooked, too dark, saturated with light, etc. They don't have to be perfect, just presentable.
- Minimize "white-space". Please make sure the image being photographed is not surrounded by too much excessive area on any side.
- Images will not be posted live until approved by Admin.
Q: All this work! What's in it for me?
A: While the excess of details may make it seem like a lot, it's actually very easy to contribute. And to make it worth your while ToyTraderz has set up a Contributors group. To be part of the group all you have to do is contribute a sole item or image to the database - that's it! But wait...there's more to it than just the satisfaction of knowing that you've permanently affixed your name to our resource, and more to it than being given a sexy little designation with your forum profile. Each month ToyTraderz will hold a drawing for a $25 gift certificate to the winner's choice of eBay.com, Amazon.com or ToysRUs.com! All you have to do to be eligible each month is contribute five images, items and/or categories. You'll be given one entry for five contributions and an additionanl entry for each contribution afterwards. At the end of the month all entries will go into a drawing and the winner will receive the prize of their choice. Not bad for just a little work! Please note that if there are not at least 25 contributions within a calendar month that month's contest will be cancelled, but all contributions will be carried over into the following month's contest.
